My autumn fragrance collection – new additions

It’s about this time of year that I like to swap around the fragrances  I have on display. I put away the overtly summery scents and bring out the autumn/winter stash. What’s exciting this time around is that I’ve got two new fabulous scents to add to the collection that I want to share with you.

You might remember that in previous fragrance posts, I noticed themes emerging – last spring it was tea and rose that stood out as the key elements I spotted. The rose theme has definitely continued through into the Autumn/Winter launches but I’ve also spotted the patchouli theme coming through really strongly.

Now being a teen in the seventies means that I have very fond memories of wearing (drenching myself in) patchouli oil to try and be one of the cool kids – I was never one of the cool kids! So I had a mix of fond memories and apprehension when I went about exploring what the contemporary fragrances that incorporated patchouli would be like.

So to refresh my autumn collection (which I’ve listed in full at the end of this post for the curious among you) I selected the Van Cleef and Arpels Collection Extraordinaire Midnight Patchouli and the Etro Patchouly EDP.

Etro Patchouly EDP

etro-patchouly

Patchouly is one of the first fragrances created by Etro. It’s an oriental woody fragrance that’s designed for men and women. Its keynotes are lemon, patchouli, sandalwood, amber, and musk. They’ve created a new limited edition bottle out in time for Christmas that launches on 3 October nationwide with imagery inspired by nature – the lava of a volcano. Here’s a sneak peek at how it looks.

Etro has some wonderful descriptive words, ( a poem perhaps? ) that describe the concept and experience of the fragrance:

Patchouly

[ Fragrant fire ]

Glowing embers after the blaze.
Resin and rose, a powerful blend.
The smoking nostril of a bull
adorned with flowers like an Indian painting.
Night at the far ends of the day,
lava lapping the volcano’s rim.

I think that the imagery is really exciting and it will make a great Christmas gift I’m sure although secretly I’m in love with the elegance and femininity of the original bottle with the silver cap. I’ve been wearing the fragrance quite a bit even though the weather is still summery and I’ve found it to be lighter and more floral than I’d expected from the written description. I definitely think it’s a great transitional fragrance.

Van Cleef and Arpels Collection Extraordinaire Moonlight Patchouli

This Van Cleef & Arpels Midnight Patchouli is a class act. It’s an object of desire right from the first glimpse. Stark black against white sets the tone for a fragrance reminiscent of a dark woodland that’s lit up with a silver flash of moonlight symbolised by the silver tag.

It’s described as a floral leathery chypre, a patchouli that caresses the skin like a wood in the moonlight. Soft tones reveal a delicate floral note that combines rose and iris. Precious notes of a warm sued accord, imbued with leather and fruity accents.

For me, this is definitely not for summer or for daytime. It’s rich and heady and intriguing. It’s available now nationwide. I’d say that it’s suitable for men and women so treat yourself or add it to your wish list and promise to share if you can bear it.
